GEORGIA LAW CENTER FOR THE HOMELESS

     In metropolitan Atlanta, The Georgia Law Center for the Homeless under Amy Zaremba (shown left) is the only agency dedicated to providing free legal representation and advocacy to people who are homeless or about to become homeless.  The staff is made up of three practicing attorneys, four paralegal advocates (three full-time and one part-time), five administrative staff and 15 to 20 volunteers.

BACK TO B.A.S.I.C.S.

     An unwavering factor for those completing a prison sentence is that gaining employment becomes a task.  In order to gain employment, one has to obtain the necessary skills. Unfortunately, those having a criminal background, whether for minor or major offenses, are scrutinized more closely.  They are told they do not have the skills needed for employment or their break in employment is too long.  Prejudices soar in reading the application of a person with a criminal background who has just been released from prison.

PARENTS OF MURDERED CHILDREN

Children being murdered.  Why?  In the natural order of things, parents usually die before their children.  For death to occur the other way around, is thought to be unnatural.  “The worst is losing a child.  It is two things you never really get over, losing a mother and losing a child,” says Katherine Warthen.  She lost her youngest son January 1996, to gun violence.  She passes the street everyday where her son was murdered but refuses to look in that direction.

ATLANTA TRANSITIONAL CENTER CHOIR

     

Big Miller Grove Baptist Church served as host to the Atlanta Transitional Center Choir in a Sunday service dedicated to the reformation of convicted felons and deterrence of youth from the criminal justice system.  The message was clear: CHOOSE FREEDOM.   The choir made use of song & spirit to encourage the youth of Big Miller Grove to choose freedom through God, rather than incarceration by way of the streets.

PROJECT TURNAROUND

A new program designed to combat drug activity in the City of Atlanta was recently launched by Fulton County District Attorney Paul L. Howard, Jr. and Fulton County Superior Court Judge Marvin S. Arrington, Sr.    Project Turnaround, a pretrial intervention program, is a partnership of the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Atlanta Police Department, Fulton County Probation, Fulton County Superior Court, and the Concerned Black Clergy of Metropolitan Atlanta.
